Real Estate Bargains can be Found at Government Websites

General NewsThe federal government's best real estate resources: the combined property disposition program inventories of 10 agencies, all rolled into one online access point.

The offerings change daily, the sales hype is refreshingly restrained, and the caveats plentiful when you browse through the properties.

Available from the Internal Revenue Service, the General Services Administration, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the Housing and Urban Development Department, the Veterans Affairs Department, the Small Business Administration, the U.S. Marshals Service, the Army Corps of Engineers, the Agriculture Department and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. Each of those agencies ends up with unwanted real estate through its own specialized activities.

Hundreds of asset categories the Marshals Service link can serve you, like land, houses, boats, businesses and others.

HUD, the SBA, Veterans Affairs and the Agriculture Department foreclose on some of the properties they insure or finance. Customs, the IRS and the Marshals Service seize properties for criminal violations or nonpayment of taxes and sell them on the open market.

The largest of the federal government that is the HUD's own portfolio. The other agencies' sites are lesser known, less visited and contain fewer properties for sale. But they offer diverse and intriguing possibilities.
